Camp Reimagined

[VIRTUAL CAMP]

We know virtual camp is not what any one would have imagined camp to look like this year, or any year. We promise, a time will come when not only are we back together for Montlure gatherings during the year, but we will be back to in-person physical summer camps. In the meantime, we have reimagined and developed an incredible program in order to continue building the Montlure community. Camps are available for campers entering grades 1-12 in the fall of 2020.

Please see Montlure.org/covid-19 for our entire response to the covid-19 crisis.

How It Works

Campers will receive a schedule of activities and virtual events prior to camp. Each day of camp, we will have a blend of online activities and self-guided offline activities (some activities will also be geared toward intergenerational opportunities for the whole family). Campers will receive a unique username/password to login to a virtual camp site for the week (montlure.virtual-camp.org), as well as for additional small group check-ins for the rest of the summer. Campers will also receive a camp t-shirt, water bottle, and various program materials and resources needed for the whole week.

Our summer staff has been working incredibly hard to reimagine and develop a program that aligns with the mission and value of Montlure, while also utizlizing tools and resources in ways we’ve never imagined.

In addition, we will release camper workshops following our Virtual Camp weeks to allow campers and staff to come together through shared interests.

While it may be a summer we never imagined, it will truly be a summer we never forget. This is, Camp Reimagined.

For questions, please email Camp@Montlure.org.

Purpose

Due to the covid-19 crisis, Montlure has had to shut down all in-person camps for 2020 in order to protect the health and safety of our campers (montlure.org/covid-19). However, we strongly believe the campers of Montlure need each other more than ever. In order to continue building community and the momentum we have seen the past several years, we have created a program to engage campers all summer long.

Strength

The strength of our program is the creativity and passion. Virtual Camp, in this way, is uncharted waters. Our staff is working tirelessly to plan and prepare for camp as well as the options for rest of the summer. We are thankful for the collaboration of the entire camping community across the world through brainstorming efforts, yet the online week and the material developed is uniquely Montlure; from the curriculum, to the printed resources, to the programming.

Uniqueness

We recognize technology is a gift during this time in our human history, however, we hold true to our mission of being “unplugged.” While some concessions must be made to utilize the gift of technology in order to build community engagement, we are also seeing that we are “plugged in” more than ever before. We are committed to provide tools, resources, and space in our schedule for campers to unplug, connect with with their faith, and experience the beauty of creation.

Camp Fees

We understand that during this time, there are many families that may not be able to pay much for camp. We are working very hard to keep the costs for families as low as possible. With this in mind, we have kept our self-selected Tier payment options. We encourage families to pay the highest tier they are able in order to help us offset our costs for this program as much as possible.
(To make an additional donation to help fund summer programming, see Montlure.org/support.)

Their device will need to have a working camera.

We will only be using our virtual camp platform (montlure.virtual-camp.org) and Zoom. We are keeping online resources simple and to a minimum.

Camper Kits

We are constructing camper packages that will include Montlure camp memorabilia along with all the needed resrouces for camp including program materials as well as print outs of activities and instructions.

At this time, we are hoping to offer some “drive-thru” pick up times/locations of the boxes, we are working develop a delivery system within the Montlure Council, and we will have the ability to send packages to campers who are further away. More details will be emailed to registered families, however, we hope to keep postage costs down as much as possible and will continue to find ways to do so.

Other than online access, campers do not need any other supplies. However, a markers, glue/tape, and scissors may be helpful. In addition, we will be encouraging campers to construct a space for camp for the personal devotion time and some of their offline activities. This could be a tent in your backyard, a tent in the house, a fort made from couch cushions, or even a fort built in a bedroom with blankets and pillows. They will not need to do this prior to the start of camp as they will receive more instructions, but we wanted to let you know ahead of time so you can assist gathering materials/making arrangements in order to help make this a memorable and special week. (By all means, this does not need to be elaborate in any way! Just something that can be set apart for camp all week long.)

Online Safety

As always, the safety of our campers is our first priority. This includes online safety. We are working to develop and scrutinize online safety protocols for our program this summer. They will be emailed out to campers/families prior to camp along with a safety video designed specifically for campers to watch to with parent/guardians.

We will also hold various “Virtual Open Houses” in order for families to log in, test their technology, go over safety protocols, and answer questions. Dates/times of open houses will be email to registered families.

We are diligently looking at every angle. While we are developing our best-practices, reviewing it with professionals and our Montlure Camp Council, you are welcome to email camp@montlure.org for questions, and/or suggestions on how to keep our community safe.

12th Grade Campers

We know this is an incredibly hard summer to be a 12th grade camper; a summer in which it is the last to participate as a camper. We see you. You are not forgotten.

We have a few things in store for you this summer, but beyond that, we want to make a promise to you: We cannot promise when, but we can promise we will, have a special Seniors-only lock-in during the 2020-2021 school year. More details will be sent to all registered senior campers when we are able to give more information. You are loved!

All Camp Get-together

Similar to our event to be held for seniors, we also want to promise: We will have an in-person get together for all Montlure campers. Whether that is at the end of the summer, Fall break, Christmas break…at some point, when we are safely able to gather together, we will hold the biggest Montlure rally of current campers ever! More details will come!

Summer 2021

We understand not meeting in-person this summer is a difficult time for our community. We want you to know virtual camp is not a replacement for camp indefinitely. We know it isn’t the same. We know there is a lot to grieve about our time physically apart this year and that there is nothing better than physically being at camp together. But virtual camp is a way we can intentionally stay connected, have meaningful conversations about faith, and still have some fun (we promise!) in this weird time in human history. In addition, we know there are those out there who have yet to come to camp with us and this is a great introduction to our community! We are excited to meet new campers.

By making the hard, but appropriate decision to suspend in-person camps this summer, we get to hold camp next summer. Hold on to that thought. There are many reasons why this has to happen this year given our circumstances (see montlure.org/covid-19 for more), but we do look forward to our camp reunion in 2021. And what a glorious reunion that is going to be! So let’s stay strong, stay connected this summer by reimaging what camp looks like in this time of history, and continue to explore where God is working in the midst of at all. Together.
